Project #2: Button Up to Tie-Front Blouse Refashion + 2 Tricks

June 29, 2017

Good morning beautiful humans! It's Day 4 of Refashion Your Summer Wardrobe and my second refashion for the week! If you missed my first refashion, you can find it here. Also, reminder to ENTER our 2 giveaways before they close!

Today, I'm sharing the look you see above, which is a transforming a slouchy button up that I might wear with sleeves rolled up, a cardigan, and boots in Fall... into a short-sleeve, button-less, tie front blouse for summer. It's a fairly easy refashion, but one that completely changes the whole look! I have been loving all of the ties that are trending this year, as they are a simple, but interesting, detail that can give pieces a more flattering shape and work with many, many body types.
I've also been DYING over the gingham trend. I <3 gingham and think this trend should last forever and ever, amen.

With this refashion, I'm sharing 2 tricks with you that I use in refashions:

1. One of the easiest, best ways to instantly transform a button up shirt (without having to do major deconstruction and reconstruction of the garment) is to get rid of the placket and make it into a blouse with center seam. How do you do this?! Well, you simply button up your shirt inside out (don't button up and then turn inside out... turn inside out, then button up), lay your shirt in half and smooth it out flat. Pin down the placket, and sew a seam just beside the placket. And viola! You now have a blouse with center seam. Bye, bye buttons! This little trick is a 2 minute transformation and I love it. Obviously you will have to do something with that neckline/collar. But that's where my next trick comes in.

2. My favorite way to finish a rounded neckline when I'm refashioning is simply using bias tape (from store or homemade -- but I cheat on this, too) and wrapping it around the neckline. I don't do the whole... Match up one edge, sew, fold the tape to the other side of the neckline. Iron. Pin. Topstitch. Nope. Just simply case the raw edge of the neckline between the two halves of your tape. Pull the tape tight as you wrap it around the entire neckline. Pin in place. And topstitch. Bam! You're done. It's a favorite trick of mine because it saves me a lot of time and is not technical whatsoever.

Kay! I hope those 2 tricks will help in YOUR refashioning process. Remember, I'm NOT a seamstress. That's why I heavily rely on little shortcuts and tricks in my sewing! ;)

You can watch the whole transformation of this button up to tie-front blouse below. Happy Refashioning, friends!
